To Mark,
I'm the editor of a student newsletter at school and in this months issue I'm writing an article on the rising japanese manga culture in the west, and particularly your works with Miki falls. Its would be AMAZING if I could ask you 3-5 questions on how it was like for you growing up, and where you found your inspirations. A lot of kids have been reading Miki falls lately and I think they would really find it interesting. I would really really really appreciate it !!!

Thank you so much !! How did you come up with the idea for Miki falls, and how long did it take to develop? What was the hardest thing about creating a manga/comic? Were you interested in manga/comics during your high school years? Where do you look towards for inspiration and what are the greatest influences on your work? What advise can you give to young artist?

Here ya go, Spec:
How did you come up with the idea for Miki falls, and how long did it take to develop?
--Miki Falls is loosely based on the concept of Cupid: the idea that falling in love is not something that just happens, but is controlled by a celestial being. I came up with the basic concept over the course of a single afternoon.
What was the hardest thing about creating a manga/comic?
--The trickiest thing was to find the proper mix between a real manga look and my own approach to illustration. I'm still not sure I found the right balance.
Were you interested in manga/comics during your high school years?
--When I was in high school, 1981-84, manga was still pretty much "underground" in America. I first became interested in manga when I began teaching English in Japan in 1991.
Where do you look towards for inspiration and what are the greatest influences on your work?
--I am most inspired by my readers, the ones who really get my stories and connect with them in a personal way. my old college mentor David Small is still one of my biggest influences.
What advise can you give to young artist?
--Don't just "play around" with getting better: get obsessed with it and put all of your spare time into studying the masters of art and illustration.
