So, there's been a game engine that I've wanted to use for a while, because it's browser based. (back when it came out when I was in college.) Problem was, the editor was Mac only. I personally hate Mac, and will never buy one, and would prefer not to use one, so I was in a spot. The other thing was, it's $1,200 (USD) to get the editor and engine.
Recently (I think it was back in November) they made a Windows version, and when they did, they also made a slightly limited free edition. So much to the point that you can even sell games made with the free version. (Double check with their sales department, that's what I got out of it.) They have been expanding the platforms they support massively, to where now it supports the iPhone/iPod Touch, and even the Wii.
The next iteration will support Xbox Live as well, so pretty cool stuff.
Well, I just found out on Thursday or so that it was free, and have been messing with it, and even have been doing a tutorial from youtube to make a basic 3rd person shooter, very similar to a Mario Kart multi-player battle. So, if you guys want to check out where I am right now, you can!

You'll have to install the unity web player (a 3-4MB file) but it runs in most browsers, and the game itself (including textures and 3d models) is currently lest then 1MB.
Standard WASD/Arrow keys for movement, and space to shoot a fireball. Let me know what you think so far. I plan to try and do a basic fighting game (Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, etc) as my next project. I'd be cool to get multi-player capabilities with it also, but we'll see if I even get anywhere with it.
**Note, I know the fireballs go through the ground, and I know that you only spin once when being hit. The video tutorials are still being made, so I don't have it finished, but I have learned a lot so far.
[Update (a few hours after the first post)]
Added death to the turret with a spiffy smoke particle effect. Hopefully I can make explosions look a little better later down the line, but still. It works.
