Hi guys, it's been a while! I searched for this, never found anything, so I just thought I'd make a new thread dedicated to people having trouble with hair. For those of you who are experts at drawing hair, how did you learn to draw it? What techniques are applied? Thanks to all in advance.

I would not call myself a master, but I will tell you that I have learned quite alot about drawing manga hair because it was something I too struggled with. And while I am far from an expert, I can draw it alot more comfortably.
What I do is get the basic shape down in light pencil. Its where I pick what direction its moving in, long or short, etc. Then I move to the forhead, and lightly draw some guidelines for how that is going to look. This can be just a basic line that shows where the seperation of hair and forehead is, or can go as far as to actually have some bangs.
Then when its time for the final drawings of the hair (in pencil anyway) I draw quick lines and let them flow naturally. I dont just copy the guidelines. This makes more lively looking lines. The trick is to do it fast. It just feels more natural that way.
One of the best things you can do is do some sketches of characters with similar hairstyles first.
But this is kind of a difficult question to answer. What exactly gives you trouble when drawing hair?

This tutorial helped me alot about hair. www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBy0xqp9hNE Style .. When i dont know how to make clump shape for my character i begin by doing a test with some kind of more realistic hair with hundred of quick stroke line. This way i often find the shape i wished for. Pose . I began to think about hair more like a body pose . I try to pose with a skeletone for hair clumps on my sketch. Or guideline like cn3wton said. There are half clump guide line from the Mark crilley book that i found to work quite good with a graphic tablet. Highlight .. It realy improve hair overall look.

Nice! Brilliant feedback, guys! Thanks! But this is kind of a difficult question to answer. What exactly gives you trouble when drawing hair? The only trouble that I have with drawing hair is making it look natural, and not to stiff. I can't seem to draw good, flowing hair. I'm also fascinated by the Death Note hairstyles and am trying to look at that artist's style.

Yes, the Death Note hairstyles do have a lot of overlapping, but that's what I like about them, and they look more realistic too ;D

The only trouble that I have with drawing hair is making it look natural, and not to stiff. I can't seem to draw good, flowing hair. I'm also fascinated by the Death Note hairstyles and am trying to look at that artist's style. Well as far as making it look natural not stiff, this is a problem that can arise from any lines in a drawing. But it can be most evident when drawing hair. A way to improve this is the SPEED at which you create the line. When you are inking, or finishing of guidelines with a more permanent line of any kind, do not just trace the guideline. You need to draw them quickly and like I said, let it flow naturally. It won't be perfect the first time, but you will get better and better at drawing them naturaly. If you watch any videos that Mark does, you will see that he does the hair very quickly. Pretty much just by flicking his wrist. This gives it the natural, lively look. As far as the Death Note hairstyle, I find it easier to recreate than others with less hair definition (I have always been more detail oriented). A tip I suggest would create a base with little definition (like a guideline) then add definition to each guideline. Drawing smaller clumps within it to create the overlapping hair. This will get easier as you practice, just like creating the quick lines. But I think the most important thing you can do is try to recreate the hairstyle you like. But don't copy it exactly. Don't just look at a reference pick and say, "Oh thats a little almost shape going to the right, with a little bit hanging off" Instead look at it and see why it is what it is. Something like "Oh that hair is stuck/combed/styled that way so it looks like that". Don't just blindly recreate your reference.
