I just completed a sketch~ and i'm a little confused on what to do after inking in terms of coloring... I feel like it would be rude to just go with my typical red white black combo I seem to fall back on a lot... any suggestions~? Oh, and I use Paint tool Sai and for my tablet I use an Intuos4 M

I just started coloring (traditionally and somewhat digitally) and I have to say that I prefer to try colors that fit the character. Google what colors represent certain moods. For instance purple can mean wealth, red can be considered sexy. A color I think that would really fit this character would be yellow (my personal favorite). Not a really bright one but a somewhat paleish yellow (closer to white). And if you want to go for a more traditional haircolor a light brown-ish. If your going for a more out of the ordinary a color complimentary to yellow could be cool. You could also have her be blond with a green outfit.
But all in all I definitely get a "pale color" vibe from this character. Meaning that I belive you should avoid bright vivid colors and stick to muted ones. Let the character portray more than the outfit.

In this case, the outfit either screams for pastel like colors (light blue, light purple, pink, white, etc), or the red/black. I think the lighter colors would work great on this pic though. A lot more then the darks.
It also depends on character personality. Someone that's dark and dreary isn't normally going to wear a bright happy outfit, where as a bubbly personality isn't generally going to wear black/dark red, etc.
This pic looks like a bright cheery person that's just confused or dumbfounded, so I say lighter colors.

try this, copy past the line art a couple times in a row on one canvas. color each of the girls differently and choose which one feels the best.

O-o I use layers... one color per layer, add shadows on top, then all you have to do is change the color mask of the specific color with they style settings. O-o at least that's how I do it.
