I just completed my collection and re-read all the comics, and would love to chat about Akiko to anyone who'd like to! I get a little depressed looking at how abruptly the series ended, and how the fan community slowly petered off, so if anyone's still out there let me know.
(my one comfort is knowing that I've only read through book 5 or 6, so I can still re-read them and have 4 or 5 completely new stories ;D)

Well, we got a pretty good run as YA series go. It didn't burst through to become the next Goosebumps, but Mark got to tell a lot of the stories he had. We even got a few books of Akiko grown up some, so it's not like she's in complete stasis like many kidlit protagonists.

That's true, but issue 52 even had a cliffhanger in it! Sure, the Megakiko wasn't a major storyline, but still. I wish Mark would come back to comic books for maybe a limited run series, maybe 10 issues, of an Alia Rellapor or Bornstone's Elixir kind of story, some epic storyline.

I'm pretty sure Megakiko was never meant to be finished. It was riffing on the artificially cliffhangery nature of the adventure manga genre. In any case, Mark's pretty busy with art books and Brody's Ghost. Digest-sized stuff that bookstores are more likely to carry is a more stable bet than monthlies. ---Dave
