Since kicking my artwork back into gear after a decade of neglect, I have been interested in how a good amateur artist studies things and practices their art. In the past my sketching was very random and I tended to stick to safer work and didn't challenge myself. This time I'm determined to really challenge myself and practice/study things more intentionally. As I'm working on beginning some comics at a snail's pace, at a frame or two at a time, I'm thinking that I should do practices of things when I hit a weak point in my work. What I mean by practicing or studying is, for example, an artist has difficulty with drawing someone of a certain age, and experiements drawing that for a time until they can draw it in their work. Do artists do this sort of thing on a regular basis?

Just keep drawing. No one just sits down and draws something perfect the very first time. Uploading images to sites like this and deviant art can help you get some feedback too.

Thanks, I'm figuring it out. I figure attempting some sort of comics will be a great challenge.

Try to create pictures/images that tell a story without words, then move onto comics. I have also been told that the best books you can buy for learning how to make comics are actually cinematography. The 5 c's of cinematography was what Greg Capullo suggested when I spoke to him at comic con a few months ago.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm finding the dynamic between random practices and challenges, and drwing more intentional projects. My brother has a degree in screenwriting so we're going to work on making a comic one panel at a time. I figure jumping into drawing comics ties it all together.

I'll have to get my brother to help me figure out the linking process, as I'm not very tech savvy.

If you have it on yourcomputer you can just add it as an attachment when you click the reply button.
That means you can reply in the quick reply box, but you have to click the repy icon with the folder at the bottom or top of the thread.

Do you use Google Chrome? If you do, you can also simply right-click on a picture (if you have DeviantArt, you can do this to your pictures) and then click "Copy Image URL". You then paste this URL <between these bracketed letters>[/img]. Then it should look like this:

I don't know anything about those sites yet. My brother is helping me put my portfolio up.
