So as you all know I took some time to read some anatomy books and I feel they have helped me out quite a bit. So I have decided to go through and work on it (yet again) by drawing each part of the body and really learning the main muscle groups. I figured I would attach my first page that I did and see what you all think. What do you do prefer to do to practice anatomy? If this ends up helping someone else out too that would just be a bonus! EDIT: Sorry its so large... I will try to remember to shrink it down if I post another. Also there is a method to my madness with the different colors. The red outlines all muscle groups and defines each one a little bit. Blue indicates areas that I find "interesting". This could be something new I learned, or something that I think would be interesting at some point. And of course the sharpie/dark pencil lines are what I would include if I was stylizing the drawing. Attachments:

It seems that western comics tend to go more hardcore on anatomy. It always helps to know all the implicit structures under skin. I'm bad at this.

Indeed western comics do. However even manga needs some anatomy knowledge.

Do manga artists exaggerate certain proportions on purpose? Or do some just have a lack of skills in anatomy?

I would say probably both. However I suggest (unless you just want to be able to draw cartoony manga) studying anatomy. Like I said learn the rules before you break them. I have gotten away from style and am focusing more on representing things how I see them / how I think they should look.

Fair enough. I'm attempting to learn anatomy at the moment, but I'm having a bit of difficulty where to start. Some drawing lessons I've looked at draw the subject's pose as a stick figure first as guidelines, and then instruct you to "flesh out" these lines to give it figure. The problem is, I don't know how to do this. To get an understanding of muscles and such, what do you guys recommend? Would I need to draw a person's muscles just as cn3wton has done above?

There are many ways to do this. I will go into more detail when I get home. The stick figure is used for weight distribution and proportion. You should only think about these things when doing them.
You do not need to know the muscles themselves. But the forms and shapes they make at certain angles.

You can use those references www.posemaniacs.com/The model do not have skin so it's easy to learn where the muscles are.
