I'm thinking of doing a short comic-style story, not necessarily manga style.
I want to know if people would rather see a comic that has that shading like I added or if they would rather see black and white.
Also, if people would prefer a more polished and simple-lined art style or a more sketchy. I like sketchy, I would say my favorite manga artist's style is Yoshihiro Togashi.
I'll upload the sketch I started with, the black and white, and the shaded.
By the way, I did this in Manga Studio EX 4.0 and used a Wacom Graphire small/medium pen tablet. It's my first time drawing digitally, so naturally my art is better on pencil and paper.

The head is either too big, or your style is too realistic looking for those proportions to work. Page File05(you could name those, you know) looks best. The jedi chick looks too, um, masculin(the neck is to thick and the muscles too pronounced). If you like the sketchy style, then I think you should check Taiyo Matsumoto's post Ping Pong works(since till then his art was similar to an european doujin comic).

From what ive seen of big name published comics, if youa re going to do black and white you need to be really good at it otehr wise it will look bad. You also would have to have neat lines, sketchy with just black and white is both really really hard and can easily look bad. The opposite can be said for shaded drawings. sketchy lines can work but still needs to be clear what your depicting. Alost of big name comics Ive read had a combination of lots of black space and still work in shading. Its confusing when written but if you see it in a comic you will know what i mean.

thanks guys i finally got some d**n comments.
i dont really see what you mean jedi chick looking masuline at all? have you read any marvel comics? and pagefile 05, really? i thought if any sucked it was that one (i did it in 3 minutes)
yeah i agree looking at it now, the first one's not great.
about the solid blacks, its the first time i tried to do it, but i love looking at black and white comics like bone or walking dead for example, its like an art in itself how an artist knows where a random solid black(as in not just for shadow) should go. I was trying to be less precise with the latest one, try and let my lines be faster and more... idk uneven. have you read the walking dead comics (particularly charlie adlards later art).
I would say my favorite american comic is ultimate spider man, you should look at that i feel blasphemous for saying this here but i dont really think mark crilleys (his comics kinda suck, i bet everyone just found themselves here because of the youtube videos, which arent that popular anymore) very good, i just wanted some criticism, so thanks (watch me get banned)

Nice I like the sketchy style that you got. I think that Maybe your character feet are little bit small. You could look at this channel www.youtube.com/user/jonathanrector/videos You seem to have a style that match with him and he have some good tutorials with black and white style. I'll take a look at ultimate spider man I think I need to look at something else than a mangas, sometime.

yeah totally thanks i looked at your art and i think your coloring job on those latest few pieces is superb. the latest piece including the sketch is really good. i see some of the earlier ones have odd proportions, so it shows you had a ton of improvement.
i recommend you check out also, i think its worth looking at comics like bone and the walking dead, frank millers work, and hellboy. all kinds of comics. if you read manga all the time, idk you get accustomed to the lower quality work, i guess you could say because of how much faster the artists must produce it.
have you read fullmetal alchemist? not from the art standpoint, but story, start to finish, i would say its my favorite manga, and ive read plenty. you should also look at otomo katsuhiro's akira theres some quality drawing there

You wouldnt happen to be the same mangakaryan that got banned earlier in this communities forum are you? If so I would hope that you've changed your approach to critisism, both coming and going. so far it doesn't seem like it. Attachments:

I came into the community as you left I think. I dont have all day to sit around checking the forum so my responses will, as they have always been, be sporadic. Also I would suggest you use the 'edit' tool this forum has so you dont triple post.

Yeah, I've got the banhammer close to hand. So far Ryan seems to still be fairly rude, but hasn't QUITE crossed the threshold. Then again, I haven't finished reading all the new posts since I last checked (I'm in an airport at the moment).

First off you should draw what you want to draw, in the "style" you want. Now what you shouldn't do is go and copy art from what you like. Go out and draw stuff realisticaly. Find photo reference of real people and use that. Then decide what it is you like about the style. Is it how they simplify certain things? Use this to come up with your own style then go from there. Don't start anything until you know your going to be happy working that way throughout the project.
