I noticed that when I take any picture of mine and just look at it, it looks pretty normal to me. Yet when I flip it horizontally or hold it in front of a mirror, it looks really weird, like the proportions seem out of place and such. Why is this? Wouldn't you assume it to look normal "reflected"? Having said that, when you flip a person's face in reality, it still looks the same back-to-front. So I suppose it depends heavily on proportions?

You might have a bias that gets subtracted out when you look at your work normally, because your brain corrects for it. But mirroring makes it go the wrong way, and your brain can't correct.
For instance, a LOT of artists slant things so that they lean one way consistently, and it looks fine to them.
