What colouring pencil brand is most known for its good quality? The ones I use at the moment don't really do much good for me Edit: Oh yeah, Prismacolors are kinda outta the picture too.

If you can't afford to go Prismacolor or anything that level, Crayola may be your best bet. I got a big box of them for $10 or so a while back, I still sometimes use them for "color sketching".

Oh cool, that sounds interesting. I know my local art store sells Faber Castells, but price will play a part in the decision making. Which between the two do you think has better quality?

Oh, Faber Castells are definitely better than Crayola. I thought you were saying no Prismacolor for price reasons, not availability...and shipping to NZ would probably not be a great option for Prismacolors. ---Dave

Ah, when I said no Prismacolors, I literally meant none are sold in my local art store . Well, if that's the case, I'll have a look today when I go into town. Thanks! Edit: Cool, just got back, and bought a set of FC's for NZ$16! REALLY good stuff

Now, what you might look into is a 96-pencil Crayola set as a supplement to the FCs, it'd get you some of the odder colors in between. It'd also give you colored pencils of decent quality that you wouldn't need to worry about wasting when just doodling in color.

For reference, my Beeba avatar was colored with Crayolas.

You don't really need all that many colored pencils either. You can layer the colors to change them but that takes a lot of practice. Instead you can lay down a color close to the one you want, then go over it with watercolor to tone it back.
You don't need tons of colored pencils unless your doing just colored pencil pictures, which are way too time consuming to make them appear smooth and not grainy.

For colored pencils I have about 50 loose non brand one that came from one of those beginer art kits that would have some of everything, color pencils, crayons, chalk pastels, water color paints etc. I hardly use them but when I do they seem to give me smooth consistant color, my only problem is that being that they are psrt of a cheap kit they themselves are cheap and so the lead inside by now is all broken up and I have to constantly sharpen and resharpen when I do use them.
