Hi friends! Just wanted to make clear that the new story for the 'Flights of Fancy' will in fact be new (I'll be making it in the next month or so), though it will likely only be 3 or 4 pages long. This edition will really be all about collecting all kinds of little odds and ends that never made it into the other trades.

This new version sounds like a great addition to the Crilley library. I'm hoping that it will be a good jumping-on book for some younger cousins/nephews of mine. -Mayumi

So hey - does anything from issues 48-52 make it into this revised collection?
Or if not, what new things DO make the book?

"So hey - does anything from issues 48-52 make it into this revised collection?"
Yeah, I'm pretty sure they're trying to pull in absolutely everything that hasn't been put into trades before. So those issues will definitely be part of it.

Let's see - old book was 144 pages. New book is 264 pages... New Book at AmazonExtra 120 pages - 4 page new Akiko story = 116 pages. Issues 48-52 is 5 issues ----> 116/5 = 23 pages. Sounds close to everything given a 32 page comic book - how many art pages were in each issue? It would be nice to have everything in the trades!

I'm very excited for this new Akiko trade paperback. The original "Flights of Fancy" is possibly my favortie book out of all the trades, so I can't wait to see what else will be featured in the extended edition! Hopefully I'll be able to get it the day it's released.

So is this out? Amazon says May 25, but now it says 'ships in 1-2 months' and I have an estimated ship date of Aug 1

Mark - do you know if the new edition includes ALL of issue 50? (i.e. Matthew and my story as well?) I ask because if it does, I want to buy the 'deluxe' edition...

Sorry, Dan, Flights is not quite finished yet. There must have been some confusion about the final shipping date. It'll be all done within the coming week though, I'm pretty sure. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks Mark - I'm looking forward to this - my other question - does it complete the trade collection of all 52 issues or does it leave anything out?

Mark - well of course. But do you know if it puts the entire 52 issue series into trade paperback form?
(ok - bluntly - does it include Matthew's and my story? It would be cool if it did.)

Hated to cancel the Amazon order since I can't replace the order, but they came back saying that shipping was estimated to be Jan 1, 2008 (which means they have no clue).
And I'd paid for it with gift certificate funds and wanted to use them elsewhere given the delay.
Ah, well.

Cut and pasted review:
Akiko Flights of Fancy TPB - The High-Flying Expanded Edition: Sirius - This has the complete issues 39, 48-52, plus all the backup features (which weren't included in the other TPBs) and a few pages here and there of new material. The very last bit has Akiko at (almost) 16, which I believe is even ahead of where the current novels are (of course, there's also the "Akiko at 80" backup included). While not much for long-form storytelling, it's a great survey not only of Crilley's artistic evolution on the "regular" stuff, but the backups are also where he's always chosen to demonstrate his flexibility as an artist. Some artists have a simplified style because it's all they can do (for instance, Scott Adams or Cathy Guisewite), but even without the gorgeous backgrounds Crilley's always included in his stories, you can see clearly here how broad his skillset is on characters too. It's easy to forget lately that manga styling is only his most recent choice in art, but this gives the whole gamut. Strongly recommended. $24.95

I saw this yesterday when I went to my local comic book shop, but I unfortunately didn't have enough money with me to buy it. It should make a great Christmas present though!

Now that said, one may argue that anything not by Mark - letters pages, introductions, or other stories don't count, so it may be ok. Didn't stop me from ordering one!
