By the way Mr. Crilley, I bet if you want more people to come here to your site and sign on to your site, by you should put it in your book, to let people know they can get a hold of you and tell you what they think of the book or even tell you thank.

Hi Melinda,
Thanks for all the posts! Unfortunately I don't know too many tricks about getting books published. There's a book called 'Writer's Market' that comes out every year; There may even be a 'Poetry Writer's Market' book. The book contains lots of good info about getting published. If i were you I first try to get one of your poems published in a poetry magazine. Check out the poetry magazines at your local library and take it from there!
Thanks again for joining the forum, Melinda. I enjoy reading your posts.

Hi Mr. Crilley,
I'm new this forum and I really love your books and comics. I bought Akiko: Pieces of Gax the day it came out and I'm almost finished. I can't wait to find out what happens in the end. On the topic of your newest book, I have a question. What inspired the way you draw the 'new' Akiko?

Hi Timmy,
Thanks for joining the forum, and sorry for the delayed reply. I hope you --and everyone else here-- had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
The idea of creating a 'new' Akiko came from my publisher, Random House. They felt that the original version of Akiko looked (to kids who'd never seen her before) like a character for very young kids: Dora the Explorer, etc. They said the kids who were most likely to read my books expected their heroines to look a little older, like Kim Possible.
Adults tend to prefer the original Akiko, while kids go for the new Akiko, particularly girls, interestingly enough.
Thanks again for joining us, Timmy!
Mark

Thank you for the reply, Mr. Crilley!
I have another question for you. Do you watch any shows or read any materials that get you in the mood to draw or to inspire you?
I enjoy cartooning myself, and I watch cartoons like SpongeBob or Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends to get in the mood to draw. I also like Disney Channel shows like The Suite Life of Zack and Cody or Hannah Montana to get story ideas. Reading comics like Archie or Amelia Rules (and Akiko, of course) gets me in the mood to draw as well.
Thanks, Timmy

Hi Mark,
You will be presenting at my children's school on March 28th. I am coordinating the visit and book order, and would like to know the content of your presentation and which books and comics I should order for selling to the students. Thank you.

Hi Janeen, thanks for your post.
The best books to get for my presentations are "Akiko on the Planet Smoo" and "Billy Clikk: Creatch Battler." These are the two books I read from most often.
Here's some general info on my presentations:
"My standard presentation involves doing a live drawing demonstration at an easel, often creating as many as three separate illustrations during a single session. A popular show-closer is the 'One-Minute Drawing', in which I challenge myself to complete an illustration in no more than sixty seconds; audience members are encouraged to count down the final ten seconds in unison!
All the drawings I do during my presentation are left behind and can be given away to audience members, or kept and framed by the library or school as a memento of the visit.
I also do lively readings from my books, adopting different voices for each of my characters, and going to great lengths to bring the scenes to life as vividly as possible. When I tell audience members at the start of a reading to "fasten your seatbelts," I mean it!
My presentations are more than just fun and games, though. Between the jokes and silly voices is an ample supply of information about writing and storytelling: The art of creating characters that really seem to live and breathe; The importance of putting conflict at the heart of a story; The parallels between students being asked to rewrite assignments and authors working on the second (or third or fourth!) draft of a manuscript.
My kids programs tend to be fast-paced and adapted to short attention spans, whereas in my teen programs I can focus a bit more on behind-the-scenes stories from my experiences as a writer/illustrator, as well as provide 'how-to' tips for aspiring writers and artists in the audience. I always try to tailor my program according to the requests of those arranging the visit."
Thanks again for the post, Janeen! Hope to see you on the 28th!
Mark

I just found out about this forum this morning, from MarkCrilley.com. Since Mark says that he reads this forum a lot, I thought I'd make my way over here. While I do miss the Yahoo!Groups Akiko group (I lost username and password a while ago), I think that a Mark Crilley group (fan club?) is somehow more appropriate now. I have always loved and probably will always love the Akiko universe (_The Story Tree_ is still one of my all-time favorite books!), but there are so many other projects that Mark has that are deserving of attention. Personally, I can't wait to see _Miki Falls_ hit the shelves! I am really enjoying Mark's newer art style - there's so much more room for expression and emotion. And I have to face facts - Akiko is growing up, and this new art style really suits her! -Mayumi

Hi Mayumi, Thank you so much for joining us! You have always been so supportive of all my different projects, I really greatly appreciate the encouragement you send my way. (one of my great regrets is not having included you in the 'fan appreciation' section of Akiko #50; if only I had a time machine I'd correct that in a heartbeat!) Thanks for your excitement about Miki Falls. I don't know if every Akiko fan will be equally interested in Miki, but from my perspective anyway, this project has allowed me to 'rediscover myself' as a comic book storyteller. And comic book fans will no doubt be glad to hear that I am now firmly back in the business of doing comics. I've got loads of ideas for new projects, and I expect I will be pitching most of them as graphic novel projects for the foreseeable future. Thanks again for joining us Mayumi! Hi Sarah! That's a good question; I know HarperUK is releasing Miki Falls next year (2008) rather than this year. I wonder if that also means they'll become available in Australia? I'll have to look into this... Thanks for watching my Youtube vids; I've gotta get another one done, it's been a while! Hi Natalie, Thanks for the question, and sorry for the delayed reply! Making a good comic involves studying the comics you love and trying to do similar things (with your own ideas and style) in your own comics. I use my first draft to work out all the bugs, so that's a good tiime to keep things really loose and leave the details for later. Hope this helps! hey mark, I also came across your youtube videos. Since I started to practice drawing recently I was looking for some good tutorials and saw yours. they're really great because you talk about what you are doing in them, most of the others just play some music while they draw in the video... I'm from Belgium (you might know brussels) and all that miki watching got me curious about the story... does it come out in this region, let's say europe? keep it up, I'll be watching, just subscribed to your youtube channel !!

Hi! Thanks for joining the forum. It's kind of amazing to me that these Youtube videos I've been doing are being seen all over the world! I sincerely hope Miki Falls will eventually be translated and become available in Belgium as well as other European countries. For now the closest you'll get is the HarperUK edition, which is due out next year (2008). Mind you, the German version of Amazon.com has the original American edition right now: www.amazon.de/Spring-Miki-Falls-Mark-Crilley/dp/0007246609/ref=sr_1_4/028-9003011-2180511?ie=UTF8&s=books-intl-de&qid=1180798879&sr=8-4Thanks in advance if you choose to order it! hello mark it's sarah again dropping by to ask you a question. I was curious about you influences in you style of manga art. In some of your videos you mention how to look at other peoples works and pick up a few tips, obviously not copying there work which you have also mentioned but i was interested in whos works have inspired you and helped you create characters that you prefer. wishing you all the best sarah ;D

Hello There Mark, You have inspired me to draw again. I havent drew anything since the 5th grade, but i have started to devote my time to art. Im have just started to sketch other peoples work like from the manga/anime of Elfen Lied. For some reason my friends sketches come out more lively then mine usually do. It may be cuz of practice becuase he has been doing his sketches for about a year or two now. I know you are probably going to tell me not to give up and keep on practicing. Well, my dream is to draw and write manga so all the little kids or even the adults can enjoy my artistic side. if u wish to see my second drawing just click on this link below and it will take u to it. The picture is supossed to be Nana from the Manga/Anime Elfen Lied. i103.photobucket.com/albums/m150/HiZaVoK/Picture.jpg

Hey Mark!
I just found your YouTube account today, and your "How to Draw" videos for Miki Falls. Its kinda funny actually, I was checking the comments on my drawing tutorial, and in the "related videos" menu, I saw the watercolor tutorial for Miki Falls, and I knew I had to see it.
Needless to say I was impressed, considering I posted a bunch of positive comments all over your YouTube account, and now I'm posting here. I plan on picking up Spring and Summer of Miki Falls ASAP.
I did have a couple questions that I was hoping you could answer if you got the chance...
Could you briefly explain what you've done besides Miki Falls, like have you done other manga? Picture books? Novels?
I am working on 2 projects myself right now. One is an animation, which I seem to have a decent grip on. The other is a picture book series, however, I'm running into a problem. Since I usually do comic books, I am finding it difficult to limit myself to just one picture per page, since with comics you can show multiple images for a single action, but with a picture book you're more limited. Any advice on cutting down the visuals?
And finally, in the watercolor / inking tutorial that i mentioned earlier, I don't think I'll ever forget when you started flicking the pen around for inking. My jaw literally dropped. "How does he have such amazing control over the pen that he can swing it around at Mach 5 like that!?" I really was amazed. Any advice on controlling you Micron / watercolors (also hard for me) would be awesome.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it. And good luck with Miki Falls and all your future endeavors.
Tom Ballan, aka demonic_bunny
