Hi Tom, Thanks for the questions, and sorry for the delayed reply! "Could you briefly explain what you've done besides Miki Falls, like have you done other manga? Picture books? Novels?" You can see a pretty complete list of my published works here: www.markcrilley.com/childrensbookscomics.htmlThe lion's share of my career so far has been devoted to Akiko comics and children's books. If you like Miki Falls I'd be honored if you checked out the Akiko comic book series; if you like it there are 53 issue's worth of material waiting for you to discover! ^_^ "Since I usually do comic books, I am finding it difficult to limit myself to just one picture per page, since with comics you can show multiple images for a single action, but with a picture book you're more limited. Any advice on cutting down the visuals?" I can't advise on picture books since I've never had one published! I'll say, though, that I've seen quite a lot of "multiple images" pages in picture books, so it's not something you have to totally give up, I wouldn't think. "Any advice on controlling you Micron / watercolors (also hard for me) would be awesome." You're too kind; actually I don't think my inking skills are all that great, but I'd just say do your best to alternate between tight lines and loose lines. It's all just years of practice in the end, sad to say. For watercolors, use smooth illustration board to avoid the buckling of most papers, and don't try to go back into an area you've done more than once or twice; things get messy otherwise. Hope this helps! Mark

Tom - not that I'm an artist, but I do have a couple of picture books...
You'd really need to talk to Matthew Armstrong, who drew "The Blacksmith's Gift", but as we talked, the main issue of "one picture per page" was the concept of theme and pivotal instances.
The written story told the details; the pictures were meant to highlight those details - so it became important to insure that the one panel picture that was used highlighted the current theme of the story. And it needed to be pivotal - it needed to scream 'this is where we are in the story'.
Now, that said, if you REALLY mean 'picture book' - i.e. one for non-readers where the pictures are what tells the story (yeah - caldecott stuff) - then all I can say is - take what I just said and put it on steroids. Make sure that the theme and pivotal action of that picture simply scream that section of the story - so much so that when you move to the next picture, you simply move to the next section of the story.
I hope that makes some sense.

your newest manga, miki falls, sounds really interesting. I was thinking of creating my own manga. I have one question: do you write out the story and then draw the manga, or do you do that all together?

A lot of people start with a finished script and then do the art. I start with just an outline then write a scene at a time, going from story to art and back again. I try as best I can to have both the writing and art evolve simultaneously. mark your newest manga, miki falls, sounds really interesting. I was thinking of creating my own manga. Wow, yes i would be honoured for you to put it on your site that's fantastic!! wow you are my idol hehe i love the way you draw manga, and the life in your characters eyes. it's inspiring. thankyou. hopefully i can put some more pictures up and show them to you. thanks again sarah

hey mark, just letting u know that thanks to your positive response i had the courage to see my art teacher about my work and told him what you said. He now wants me to try and get my own comic going and publish it, which he said is something he would only recommend to year 12's, which is great. It is unlikely thought i will begin in the near future because i still need to develope my skills. He also said that he wants me to skip ahead and do year 11 art next year where as the grade i am in would be doing year 10. What a confidence booster this has been!! i intend to put more manga up soon, hopefully something finished looking. Let me know if there are any certain subjects or pathways that may help me become a manga artist or something along those lines i can't wait to see my picture on your page all the best sarah

Hey Sarah, thanks for sharing that! And congratulations, that's really wonderful that your teacher recognizes your talent and is encouraging. Well, it's only natural, really, because your work really is exceptional. Please keep me posted as things progress! I'll put your Miki drawing on my website this coming Monday. mark hey mark, just letting u know that thanks to your positive response i had the courage to see my art teacher about my work and told him what you said. Hi Mark! I hope you will be able to see this, since you have become so popular now! I just wanted to say that I really enjoy your youtube videos and I support you all the way in your art and manga production. What I enjoy most about your videos is that you are SO down to earth and you respond so respectfully towards your fans. You are a real, flesh and blood person, which is very refreshing. Most artists seem to shrug off their fans, but you never seem to busy to awknowledge and entertain questions from fans like me. PLEASE, stay this way . You seem very versatile when it comes to different types of art. How did you develop such a talent?

Wow, Crystal-chan, thanks for the kind words! Well, I dare not shrug off anyone who supports my work; they are, after all, the people who really make my job possible. I think any creative person who treats his own readers with anything but respect does so at his/her peril. Plus, it's just the right thing to do! And thanks for your suggest about a video on drawing hair. I'll definitely be doing that sometime soon. --mark Hi Mark! I hope you will be able to see this, since you have become so popular now! Er...Mr. Crilley? Hi, You might not remember me...but on myspace- I put up a few of my manga drawings, and also had a character named Miki... :} Anyway...I had a few questions. I want to start my own manga...And I know I still have a lot of experience to gain before I can begin...because my art is still not so good...But, I was wondering, how do you begin your manga business? The whole publishing and everything? Do you need an editor and other people? If so, how? And, where can I buy manga supplies from? If you have time, please reply... Thank you so much for taking your time to read this!

Hello there, I have first found you on Youtube a couple of weeks ago and thought it would be nice to register to the forum and see what's going on. Boy there's a lot of people on here. *scratches head* Is there any regulars? I'll have to go around the forum see what's going on. I -love- when the artists are available like this. It's fun to be able to interact with the author.. makes me appreciate the artwork on a more personal level . I hope you can keep up with us on the forum lol

Hello! I read two of the Akiko comics back in junior and loved them. This got me interested in manga, and now I'm minoring in japanese (no major at my university). So Akiko has been the largest determining factor in the course of my life (not sure if this is an exxageration ) I had completely forgotten about Akiko until I saw the Sprubly Islands novel at a used bookstore (so now I have a spuckler poster), and now I hear about Miki Falls! That's going to be my next internet purchase; as soon as I'm not broke). Hope I didn't sound like too much of a fanboy

For Miki Falls I fit two pages on a single 11" x 14" sheet of paper. This is pretty small, really; I'm sure manga artists in Japan work much larger. What size of paper do you use,do you use the whole entire paper for 1 page??

I sent this email to you before I came to your website I'm sure you've gotten this before and I hope you never tire of hearing it My son found your books somehow. I may have even run across it myself and given it to him to read I can't remember. But I first let him read the graphic novel and then gave him the novel to read. He LOVES your books and I have been SEARCHING for books that he would enjoy. I've started reading your books so that we are able to have meaningful conversations about them and I am able to ask better questions to test his comprehension of what he has read. The books are perfectly on his level. They are action packed without TOO much narration which we have encountered before and unfortunately bores him to death. I love that the graphic novels are slightly different than the novels and we can use that to compare and contrast them which is yet ANOTHER wonderful thing about your books. But you'd better believe that we will own the entire Akiko collection so that when his brothers are old enough to read they will also be reading these books. It has helped him to be able to see the story when he's reading the novel something he's had trouble doing. My hope is that this will carry on to other books that he reads. Now whoever writes the Avatar graphic novels needs to do the same with their books! You're great, you're wonderful and I'm glad that you wrote these wonderful books! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! A reader for life, Tia Rivera and Marcos Soto PS I've always been an avid reader so having a child who wasn't was definitely a difficult thing to get my head around and figure out how to solve! Thanks so much for your message, Tia! I greatly appreciate you getting in touch; what a pleasure it is to hear about the way the Akiko comics and novels have connected with your son Marcos. Readers of juvenile fiction are considerably less likely than comics fans to get in touch by e-mail, so I've had a sense of sending novels "out into the void" with the Akiko series, especially with the last few books int he series; so as you can imagine it's very gratifying to hear from someone like you and to know that the books have really hit home with the readers they were written for (or at least one such reader, at any rate!) Thanks again, Tia. The tenth Akiko book ("Akiko and the Missing Misp") will be out in the fall of 2008; I hope Marcos will enjoy it. Hey Mark,
I may be new to your work unlike Erika and carol, but I love your work just as much. Here in "the big island" called Australia it is very hard to find your books. So I have been on all your sites getting as much info as I can.
I always use your work on deviantart and youtube as reference for my own work. Keep it up! I may only be 15 but without artists like you I would have struggled with the basics.
I have noticed that you are one of the only Manga artists to post tutorials on the net. It really helps, Thanks.
I hope to find your work here in the near future. But for now i'll keep practicing. Keep up the great work. You have made it on to my wall of the world's best manga artists.
Bye for now,
Aaron -Kazu-
